Doing the Right Thing With Your Old TV
All television broadcast signals will be digital by Feb. 2009. Are you looking to kick your old set to the curb and buy a shiny new plasma or LCD? You’re not alone. The increase in unwanted old tube televisions is expected to skyrocket in the next 6 to 12 months as retailers put on killer sales of new sets heading into the holidays.
The ultimate green thing to do is to keep using your old set with a digital converter box. If you choose to get rid of your old set, you can not put it on the curb with your trash. TVs contain hazardous components and can not be put into the landfill, so Republic Services will not pick them up. But you can drop them off at Republic’s reycyling center on certain days of the month.
The problem here is Southern Nevada is you can’t find a 100% green recycler for televisions. Electronics reyclers of computers and such are more common, but even their practices are under the microscope of whether the recycling is actually done in the United States, or if the e-waste is being illegally sold and shipped overseas. It can be tedious and expensive to recycle and while most people don’t want to pay to have their set disposed of, it’s the right thing to do for the environment.
And until the public is willing to put out a little green for the service, it’s likely tvs will fall into the hands of those looking to make a quick buck on illegal trade. Before you hand over your tv to someone, ask what they plan to do with it. Will they really recycle it or sell it for profit, only to be sent to a poor nation and dangerously disassembled to make a little money on its parts?
